Sealants
Q: What are sealants:
A: A sealant is a plastic-like material that is applied to the biting
surfaces of the permanent posterior teeth. This plastic resin bounds
into the depressions and grooves of the biting surfaces of the tooth
and acts as a barrier protecting enamel from plaque and acids.
Q: How long do sealants last?
There is research that shows that sealants can last for many years
if properly maintained. If your child has good oral hygiene and
avoids biting hard objects, sealants will last longer. At every
routine dental visit, we will check the sealants and recommend re-application
or repair when necessary.
Q: What is the treatment like?
The application of a sealant is quick and comfortable. It typically
takes two visits. At our office we place a “rain coat”
on the tooth. The tooth is then cleaned, conditioned and dried.
Sealant material is then flowed onto the grooves of the tooth and
hardened with a blue light. Your child will be able to eat right
after the appointment.
Q: What material is used for sealants?
A: In our office we use Helioseal F by Ivovlar Vivadent, which
is a white shaded material with additional fluoride release. This
material does not contain Bisphenol-A.
