There are significant distinctions
between pediatric dentists
and
family/general dentists.
Think of a pediatric dentist like you would think of your
child’s pediatrician.
Pediatric dentists train with four years of dental school,
and in addition to this, pediatric dentists require additional
graduate work that will allow them to specialize in treating
children.
Our dental practice is tailored specifically towards working
with children. Our dentists and staff are trained to work
with children of all ages and we pride ourselves in the way
our staff interacts with our patients. Young children visiting
for the first time will be asked if they are ready to have
their “teeth counted and brushed” rather than
asking them if they are ready for a cleaning.
We also recognize that for a small child a visit to the dentist
may be scary at times, and we do our best to minimize any
stress or fear provoking behavior. Your child might hear phrases
like “put your tooth to sleep”, “put vitamins
on your teeth”, or “take pictures of your teeth”
to explain processes such as numbing teeth, applying fluoride,
or taking an X-Ray. Pediatric dentists are trained to understand
and relate to their patients. Our staff uses the “tell,
show, and do” method to let patients know what to expect
during their visit with us.
Children enjoy, and expect, to be with other children. This
social interaction is what they see at school, in playgroups,
and the sports they participate in. To expand on that idea,
we have three dental chairs in a large, single room so your
child doesn’t feel alone during their dental procedures.
The added benefit is that your child will see other children
being treated, and this can be reassuring to them during their
own visit.
In our treatment room, it is very common for our staff to
play game with your child, to sing, or let them get out of
the chair to explore. Pediatric dentistry is interactive,
and we like to talk to you and your child to determine what
method will be most successful.
