There are significant distinctions
between pediatric dentists
and
family/general dentists.
Think of a pediatric dentist being akin to a pediatrician.
Like general/family dentists, pediatric dentists train with
four years of dental school, however additional graduate
dental training is required to become a pediatric
dentist allowing these dentists to specialize in treating
children.
Dr. Coppe has had four years of specialty training after
dental school in pediatric dentistry.
Dr. Coppe’s dental practice is kid friendly from the
way he and his staff interact with patients to the look of
the office. Young children visiting for the first time will
be asked if they are ready to have their “teeth counted
and brushed” rather then asking them if they are ready
for a cleaning like your dentist might ask you.
Dr. Coppe and his staff do not use terms that are fear provoking
and typically associated with dental treatment for adults.
Kids might hear phrases like “put your tooth to sleep”,
“put vitamins on your teeth” or “take pictures
of your teeth” to explain the process to numb teeth,
apply fluoride or take an x-ray.
Pediatric dentists are trained to understand and related
to children. Using the “tell, show and do” method,
Dr. Coppe’s patients know what will happen next during
their visit.
Children enjoy—and expect—to be with other children.
This is how it works at school and in the games they play.
Dr. Coppe has three dental chairs in a large, single room
so children don't feel alone during their dental procedures.
The added benefit is that they see other children being treated
just as they will be and this is reassuring to them. The very
young or inexperienced patient benefits from the role model
of an older child who is calmly visiting the dentist.
In our treatment room, it is very common for the dental professionals
to play games with the child, or to sing, or let them get
out of the chair and explore. Pediatric dentistry is interactive
and each child is treated as a special person.
